Barrack Obama has become the presumptive nominee of Democratic party in USA. In what is being billed as epic, marathon race, he has beaten the establishment, though establishment came in the name of a woman candidate.
In fact the whole primary session that the Americans went through, the sheer energy it brought in into the political landscape is enormous. The way Barrack Obama fought Hillary Clinton, the way Hillary Clinton fought back, the way people democratic, republican or independents participated in the whole process, the whole of excitement and drama that was witnessed on TV by (b)millions of people all over the globe stands a roaring witness to the power of democracy.
Whoever witnessed this huge competition in a primary election (a mere intra-party election) to attract people into politics would have marveled at the power of ordinary people to influence politics and change it.
They would have marveled at the power of people pushing a person like Barack Obama, a african-american, put colloquially black candidate, a first time senator with little experience in a predominantly white dominated America, as an option to lead the country at the time of its worst crisis in a changing world.
What better can be done to promote democracy than actually live it through and demonstrate it to the people of world, in this way. ?
I am sure from the deserts of middle-east to steppes of Russia, from the plains of China to poverty stricken Africa, people by the power of media would have understood the power of democracy as they witnessed this marathon struggle.
Nothing comes free. And so, not even a vibrant democracy. It needs the burning desire of people from their deep inside to hold themselves accountable for their own future.
This marathon battle and this culmination inspires confidence in people that they too can be the masters of their own future through democracy. However flawed it is, a democracy has the power to correct itself through its sheer balance of forces.
What Bush failed to do with his 160000 soldiers in Iraq along with tons and tons of arms and ammunition over a period of 3+ years, Barrack Obama and Hillary Clinton did it in a span of 6 months. They have shown the millions and millions of people the power of democracy. They have seeded the desire to be a great democracy deep inside the people of this world.
Now this flame of democratic desire can never be quenched by any dictator, even if the dictators are assisted by the same Barack Obama as the President of United States of America.
